On April 26 was my private HD destroyed by the "W32.CIH.SPACEFILLER" virus, named by my antivirusprogram McAfee.

Unfortunately my antivirusprogram was not updated before this day to detect this virus.

On Sunday May 2, I saw in Swedish television that a man in Taiwan was taken by the police because he has produced the virus that destroyed my HD.

So! If someone can prove that he has made the virus, and I can prove that it was his virus that destroyed my HD, why should I not report him to the Swedish police, and demand for compensation of my lost files? And so I did!

My claims for the damage:
I claimed for 3000 SKr (about 400 USD) for compensation, which is a sum that I think I can prove to have lost, by the following reasons:

I have downloaded very much data and program files from the internet, that have cost me telephone taxes. The backup for them is internet, and therefore I have to download them again to at least the same cost. I claim for 1000 SKr (about 125 USD), that is a very reasonable claim I think.

I had many pictures of my family without backup at the time, they have a very great value for my family and myself, probably over 30 000 SKr (about 4000 USD), but I only claim 2000 SKr for them (about 250 USD).

I claim 1000 SKr (about 125 USD) for my work to get the HD in order again, with all programs that I have to reinstall, and about 2 Gb of backup to transfer back to my HD from diskettes, other computers and CD's. It will take me many days of work to restore backed up data.

My total demand for compensation of only 3000 SKr (about 400 USD), is a very moderate demand. But a very important point of view is that it is a demand that I believe I can make credible in a court that I really have lost.

To the point of view:
If all people that have had there computers destroyed by this virus, or any other virus, claim for a reasonable compensation it will be millions or even billions of dollars in demand on this and other virus producers head.

This will in turn, probably result in that powerful economical interests want to represent those who have the claims to help them get there claims into actual cash. It is very possible that one single virus producer can get 1 000 000 USD in reward on there head, and the virus producer itself can be claimed for many hundreds of millions of dollars all around the world!

Virus producers wouldn't be able to hide themselves anywhere in the real world, in any computer- or network system, someone will always track them down to earn some of the money on there head!

SUCH AN OFFENSIVE ACTION AGAINST VIRUSPRUDUCERS WILL PROBABLY BE THE END OF MOST OF THE VIRUS PAIN!

It is about time to start to count destroyed money
instead of only destroyed computers!

And bury the heroic glamour of virus production in
billions of dollars of economical demands!
